Bonton Farms Breaks Soil and Plants the Seed for a New Health & Wellness Center

Bonton Farms RenderingThe groundbreaking of a new 11,000-square-foot wellness center promoting wholeness and well-being in Bonton Farms occurred on December 7, 2023. The community space is projected to cost $5.5 million and will have a much-needed healthcare facility, a public meeting room for community events and classes, and will provide access to financial literacy and education. 

The City of Dallas Office of Economic Development negotiated a Chapter 373 Community Development grant agreement in an amount not to exceed $850,000 to help support this project. This development brings healthcare services to a Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Area as designated by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and is projected to serve more than 400 residents per year in the neighborhood and surrounding areas with healthcare, financial services, and access to healthy food.

Bonton Farms was founded in 2016 and with a mission to disrupt the historical inequities in the Bonton neighborhood and plant the seeds of nourishment to transform the community. Beginning as a small garden, the farm has expanded into two fully functioning farms, a Farmer’s Market, and a Café. With the addition of a Wellness Center, residents will be able to get much-needed medical care and receive access to financial resources and education for healthier living.

CM Bazaldua Bonton Farms GroundbreakingDistrict 8 Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins and Council Member Adam Bazaldua spoke at the groundbreaking and indicated their excitement for the project and the impact on the community as well as support for the new community development incentive program.

Methodist Community Collaborative is the project’s health care partner. Other stakeholders providing programming include On The Road Lending and the University of Texas at Dallas; sponsors providing funding, programming, and counsel are JP Morgan Chase, Southside Bank, Independent Financial, Tolleson Private Wealth, Texas Security, First United Bank, Chase Bank, Texas Capital Bank, and First Capital Bank of Texas. 

Business financial literacy and small business workshops will be provided regularly at no charge to the Dallas residents. Personal financial literacy and personal budget workshops will also be held regularly. 

The new wellness center is located at 6407 Carleton Garret, Dallas, TX 75215 and will provide the neighborhood with needed services that address the systemic barriers Bonton residents face.
