Cedar Crest Community Center Now Open

Cedar Crest Community Center Ribbon CuttingA 50-year-old community center reopened their doors on January 11, 2024, celebrating the renovation of the 7.9-acre Cedar Crest Community Center. In attendance at the ribbon cutting was the President and CEO of Behind Every Door, Darrion Lewis, and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Carolyn King Arnold along with a performance by the Roosevelt High School Marching Band.

The community center, formerly owned by the Salvation Army, had been closed since 2019. It was purchased by the Dallas based non-profit, Behind Every Door (BED) Ministries, Inc. to restore this important asset to the South Oak Cliff community.

The comprehensive project comprised of three key components. First, a 20,000 square-foot community building underwent rehabilitation, providing a dedicated space for literacy, art, and community activities. Second, a 4,000 square-foot assembly building equipped with audio and visual equipment was revamped to offer valuable A/V skills to students. Lastly, a brand new 4,000 square-foot fieldhouse transformed an existing grass field into a turf suitable for hosting football, soccer, lacrosse and even a Little League baseball field.

Cedar Crest Community Center Basketball CourtCedar Crest Community Center now boasts an array of facilities including a fitness room, golf simulator, basketball gym, football, soccer, and baseball fields and locker room facilities. The center will accommodate a Lightpath Health Clinic, Mental Health Clinic, a prayer and worship space, classrooms and convening spaces for afterschool programming and community gatherings. Youth programing and multigenerational services encompassing financial literacy, physical health, and mental health services will be provided by Veritex Bank, Catalyst Health, and the Center for Integrative Counseling

Behind Every Door was founded in 2009 and adopts a holistic, multi-generational approach providing afterschool enrichment for kids and teens, parent education, senior citizen programming, community events, employment training, financial literacy programs, and access to support services. The Cedar Crest Center joins two other community centers in Dallas that are currently managed by Behind Every Door.

Cedar Crest Community Center Sports FieldThe Dallas Development Fund, a City-related nonprofit provided $10 million in New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC) financing to support the project, ensuring the project’s viability. Due to inflation and an unforeseen requirement for stormwater site work, the budget increased to a total of $15.7 million, but with the NMTC subsidy, the scope of work remained intact, preserving the diverse range of services offered.

Now open to the public, the Cedar Crest Community Center is located at 1007 Hutchins Road, Dallas, Texas 75203 and is projected to serve more than 3,000 low-income community members.
